We have some photos that I will try and get scaned in.
From a family notebook I have this history:
Christian Steinhauer was born on May 16, 1942 in Heese Durmstadt, Germanylocated on the Rivre Marne.
This family also had two daughters, Elizabeth (betty) and Margaret.
Faced with mandatory military service at the age of 18, Christian, hismother and sisters sailed in 1858 to the USA. During the crossing, theirship ran into rough weather and landed in New Orleans rather than on theEast Coast as scheduled. The Steinhauer party went with others up theMississippi and Ohio rivers on flat boats. They disembarked atEvansville, Ind. Christian had been a butcher in Germany and also inIndiana.
Among other jobs he worked for the Cooks' Brewery in Evansville. Hetired of these jobs and hired on as a cabinboy and bartender on a steamboat on the Ohio River. After several trips up and down the river, hedecided to stay on land and enjoy the life of a rough and tumble rivertown named Paducah, Ky. He was an excellent wrestler and particularlyenjoyed the waterfront and people of Paducah.
He went to work as a bartender for John Oeschleger. While in Paducah, the Civil War arrived. The town was alternately occupied by the Northand the South for short periods of time.
Christian was rather short and young looking so he was not taken intoeither army at first. A confederate officer told him that he would betaken to serve as a Confederate soldier on his next trip throughPaducah. His reminded him of Germany. He left for Evansville as soon asthe army left town.
He lived with a family and worked as a butcher with the husband. Thisman received orders to report for 120 days of duty with the IndianaMilitia. It was considered okay to have someone else serve yourobligation. Christian, knowing his friend had a family and he had none, served the 120 days for his friend. His discharge papers were signed byAbraham Lincoln. The family still has the original discharge papers.
After the war, he moved back to Paducah and in time opened his own bar.
I'll write more later.
